Magnetic North Expeditions offers three distinct trip categories tailored to different skill levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. We strive to group riders with others who share similar experience and abilities to ensure a cohesive and enjoyable experience for everyone. While prior touring experience is beneficial, it is not strictly required; as long as you feel comfortable navigating downhill terrain, our guides will support and assist you to reach the top and down safely. This approach allows us to accommodate a wide range of riders while maintaining safety and maximizing enjoyment throughout the trip.

For your Magnetic North Expeditions adventure, essential gear includes skis, splitboards, boots, poles, and avalanche safety equipment. We offer convenient rental options through trusted partners located in Tromsø, allowing you to access high-quality equipment without the hassle of transporting everything yourself. If you prefer to bring your own gear, that is always encouraged, as it ensures familiarity and comfort during your trip. Airlines are generally accommodating with sporting equipment nowadays, making travel with your own skis or boards easier than before. At Magnetic North Expeditions, all ski tours are led by experienced guides who possess thorough knowledge of local conditions, snow safety, and terrain to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Every guest is required to have the essential avalanche safety equipment, including a probe, spade, and transceiver. If you do not own this equipment, it can be conveniently rented upon arrival. Additionally, if you are unfamiliar with using avalanche safety gear, we strongly encourage you to watch our instructional materials prior to your tour to ensure you understand how to operate the equipment effectively. Your safety is our top priority throughout your expedition.

Youll be staying aboard a spacious catamaran, designed to combine comfort and exploration in cold-weather conditions. On board, guests can enjoy an on board sauna to relax after active days. All meals and non-alcoholic beverages are provided, ensuring a hassle-free experience focused on discovery and well-being. Each trip includes guidance from a certified ski guide to help you navigate snowy terrain safely, and extra cold weather gear is supplied to keep you warm throughout the journey. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to learn sailing techniques from experienced instructors, making this adventure both educational and memorable.

Arctic snow conditions vary dramatically. Guides plan daily ski objectives based on current snow and avalanche forecasts to maximize safety and experience. There will always be snow, the question is more, what quality will it be? Often we find good snow, but dont be shocked if we come across icy layers and hard pack.

Firstly and most importantly, lets try pack our things in duffle bags. Big hardcase bags are hard to pack away and clutter the boat. In terms of clothes, warm base layers, warm jackets(general cold weather gear, waterproof outer layers, skiing socks, gloves, beanie, sunglasses/goggles, and a ski backpack and ski gear if you don't plan on renting. Slippers for when you are inside. We have warm boots for when you are outside. We have extra cold weather gear on board incase you still feel cold. We care about the environment, so encourage you to not go on a big shopping trip to buy a whol bunch of gear for the trip. Old gear works great. If you feel you are not sure what you need to bring, shoot us an email and we will advise on if we have gear you can use or if you need to purchase anything extra. Pro tip, layers keep you warm as well as let you regulate your temperature while touring. You will receive an in depth packing list after you book.
